Thursday Night Starts Week 2: Lions at Bills After Detroit's OT Open
Thursday Night Starts Week 2: Lions at Bills After Detroit's OT Open
Week 2 starts Thursday. The Detroit Lions visit the Buffalo Bills at 8:15 p.m. ET at Highmark Stadium. Prime Video has the window. The NFL posted that date on the schedule release: Thursday, Sept. 17, in Orchard Park. This desk will not invent a Thursday score. The game has not been played.
What has been played is Detroit's opener. The Lions beat the New Orleans Saints 31-30 in overtime on Sunday. What has been played is Buffalo's opener. The Bills beat the Houston Texans 36-31 on the road. Thursday is the first time those two 1-0 clubs meet. It is also the first regular-season game in Buffalo's new Highmark Stadium.
Gameday Signal is not writing Thursday as a feeling. It is writing two posted Sunday finals and one posted Thursday clock. The extra period in Detroit is the NFC fact. The last throw in Houston is the AFC fact. 8:15 p.m. ET is the next fact.
What Detroit Posted on Sunday
Ford Field needed more than 60 minutes. Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Jared Goff threw two touchdown passes to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Detroit received to start overtime. Goff hit St. Brown from 4 yards at 5:04 of the extra period. The Lions led 31-24.
New Orleans still had an answer in the extra period. Tyler Shough threw an 8-yard touchdown to Noah Fant. The two-point play was incomplete. That is why the final is 31-30 and not 32-31 or 31-31. The conversion did not land.
Shough passed for 410 yards and three touchdowns. He also had three turnovers. Chris Olave caught 10 balls for 182 yards. Juwan Johnson's 9-yard catch late in the fourth quarter forced the extra period. Detroit is 1-0 because the last two-point try failed. That is the whole posted ending.
The Lions now travel on a short week. Sunday night in Detroit to Thursday night in Orchard Park is a four-day turn. The Signal will mark the turn. It will not invent how the turn feels.
What Buffalo Posted on Sunday
The Bills won in Houston 36-31. Josh Allen found Joshua Palmer for 34 yards with 1:36 left. That is the posted winning throw. Allen was listed at 334 passing yards and two touchdowns. DJ Moore, in his first game with Buffalo, caught five passes for 100 yards. One of those catches went for 43 yards in the first half.
Houston stayed close. C.J. Stroud kept the Texans in the scoring column into the fourth quarter. The last Houston possession ended on a fumble after a strip-sack. Terrel Bernard recovered it. Buffalo is 1-0 on the road. The club had not won in Houston in Allen's career until Sunday.
Joe Brady is in his first season as Buffalo's head coach. Jim Leonhard is the new defensive coordinator. Those are posted staff facts from the league's own Week 2 announcement. They are not grades. Thursday is their first home regular-season night in the new building.
The Building Is New. The Clock Is Not.
Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park is the site. The league's schedule story said Week 2 in prime time is the stadium's debut game for Buffalo. That is the civic fact. The clock is still 8:15 p.m. ET. Prime Video is still the distributor. NFL+ is still listed as a companion window.
A new building does not change the snap count. It changes the address. The Lions are the first visiting club through that door in the regular season. The Bills are the first home club. Both facts will still be true if the game is 3-0. Both facts will still be true if the game is 40-37. This desk will wait for the final.
Do not confuse the stadium story with the Sunday stories. Detroit's story is an extra-period conversion that did not land. Buffalo's story is a 34-yard throw with 1:36 left. Thursday's story does not exist yet.
The Rest of Week 2 Is Already Posted Behind Thursday
The NFL's Week 2 schedule page already lists the rest of the prime-time board. The Indianapolis Colts visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC. The New York Giants visit the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, Sept. 21, at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN. Those windows are posted. They are not this column.
Thursday is the open. Sunday night is the middle. Monday night is the close. The Signal files them in that order. A reader who wants the whole week can wait. A reader who wants the first snap of Week 2 needs Thursday.
Week 1 still has a Monday night of its own as this is written on the Wednesday file date. That game is Broncos at Chiefs. It is not this piece. If that final is in by the time you read this on Wednesday afternoon, it still does not change Thursday's clock. Lions at Bills remains 8:15 p.m. ET.
How the Two Sunday Finals Sit Next to Each Other
Detroit's opener was at home. Buffalo's opener was on the road. Detroit needed extra time. Buffalo needed the last 96 seconds. Detroit's last score in overtime was a 4-yard pass. Buffalo's last score in regulation was a 34-yard pass. Those are parallel facts. They are not a prediction.
Both clubs allowed 30 or more points. New Orleans scored 30. Houston scored 31. Thursday is not automatically a track meet because of that. It is also not automatically a defensive night. The Signal does not do automatically. It does posted numbers and posted times.
Gibbs' 156 yards are the Lions' ground fact from Week 1. Allen's 334 passing yards are the Bills' air fact from Week 1. St. Brown has two touchdown catches in one game. Palmer has the throw that ended Houston. Bring those four names to Thursday if you want the Sunday tape. Leave the Thursday names blank until they earn a final.
Week 1 Thursday Was Melbourne. Week 2 Thursday Is Buffalo.
Week 1 did not open Thursday Night Football. It opened Wednesday in Seattle and continued Thursday night ET in Melbourne. The 49ers beat the Rams 27-7. That international date is closed. Week 2 is the first Thursday that the league's own prime-time page labels Thursday Night Football. Lions at Bills. 8:15 p.m. ET. Prime Video.
Do not file those Thursdays as the same product. Melbourne was a Friday morning local kick at the MCG. Buffalo is a night kick in Orchard Park. One already has a final. One does not. The Signal keeps them on separate cards.
The Lions' short week is a travel week. Ford Field on Sunday to Highmark Stadium on Thursday is a flight and a four-day practice window. The Bills' short week is a home week after a road opener. Houston to Orchard Park, then a Thursday night in a new building. Those are the rest facts. They are not injury reports. This desk will not invent who is active on Thursday.
Prime Video is the exclusive live window on the league's schedule page. Local television is not listed as a companion for that Thursday. NFL+ is listed. If you want the first snap of Week 2, that is the posted path.
Sunday's Other Finals Do Not Change Thursday's Clock
Chicago's 59-37 in Charlotte is still the loudest Week 1 number. It does not move Lions at Bills. Baltimore's 41-23 in Indianapolis does not move it. The Giants' 28-20 on Sunday night does not move it. Thursday is its own file because the league put it on its own night.
The Colts visit the Chiefs on Sunday night of Week 2. That game waits for Kansas City's Week 1 Monday to land first. The Giants visit the Rams on Monday of Week 2. That game waits for Los Angeles to come back from Melbourne. Those are later clocks. They are not Thursday.
Detroit's extra-period win and Buffalo's last-minute throw are the only Sunday facts this Thursday file needs. Gibbs 156. Goff to St. Brown twice. Shough 410. Olave 10 for 182. Allen 334. Palmer 34 yards at 1:36. Moore 5 for 100. Those numbers are already posted. Thursday's numbers are blank.
What This File Refuses
This file refuses a Thursday score. This file refuses a Monday night score from Week 1 if that game is still scheduled. This file refuses to rewrite last week's Kickoff preview. Patriots at Seahawks already has a final. 13-10. Seattle. That game is closed.
This file also refuses to treat Highmark Stadium as a character. It is a site with a debut date. The debut date is Sept. 17. The time is 8:15 p.m. ET. The visiting club is Detroit. The home club is Buffalo.
Gameday Signal's job on a Wednesday is to point at Thursday without inventing Thursday. The Lions are 1-0 because a two-point pass missed. The Bills are 1-0 because a 34-yard pass landed. Week 2 starts when those two facts share a field.
If you want noise, there is a new building and a short week and two clubs that just scored in the 30s. If you want the signal, there is one clock. 8:15 p.m. ET. Lions at Bills. After Detroit's OT open. That is the week.
