Tip-Off Is Four Days Out: NBC Has the Oct. 20 Tripleheader
The 2026-27 NBA season tips off Tuesday, Oct. 20, with three games on NBC and Peacock. The schedule makers gave NBC a strong card.
Boston visits Detroit at 3 p.m. ET. The defending champion Knicks host Philadelphia at 7 p.m. ET after raising their 2025-26 championship banner, with NBA Showtime coverage starting at 6:30 p.m. ET. Oklahoma City visits San Antonio at 9:30 p.m. ET at Frost Bank Center in a rematch of last spring's Western Conference Finals.
Each game has a clear reason to be on the national card. Each one also has a clear question going into it.
Tuesday's Three Games
The league is opening with the two teams that finished with the best records in the Eastern Conference last season. Detroit and Boston were the top two seeds in the East in 2025-26, and neither reached the conference finals. That shared disappointment is what makes the opener interesting. Both clubs spent the summer trying to get past the second round.
Boston's offseason changed the shape of the roster. Jaylen Brown, a five-time All-Star and the 2024 Finals MVP, is now in Philadelphia. How Boston replaces his scoring and his defense on the wing is the biggest open question on their roster, and Detroit is a tough first test.
Detroit was the No. 1 seed in the East last season. A 3 p.m. ET start on a Tuesday is unusual, and it gives the league a full afternoon and evening window. For Detroit, it is a chance to show that last season was not a peak.
The middle game is the one most people will remember. The Knicks raise their first championship banner since 1973 before tipping off against the 76ers at 7 p.m. ET. NBC's coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. ET with NBA Showtime, built around the banner and ring ceremony.
Philadelphia makes the night bigger. LeBron James, the league's all-time scoring leader, and Jaylen Brown both make their 76ers debuts in this game. James is entering his 24th season. Brown spent his whole career in Boston before this summer. Putting both newcomers on the floor at the Garden, on the night New York celebrates a title, is about as loud a start as the league could schedule.
The game itself has stakes beyond the ceremony. The Knicks are also the defending Emirates NBA Cup champions, and they open the Cup's Group Play on Oct. 30 at Philadelphia. Two meetings in 10 days will tell us a lot about whether the 76ers' new pieces fit.
ESPN Radio has the national audio call for this game, which tells you where the league thinks the attention will be.
The night ends in San Antonio with a rematch of the 2026 Western Conference Finals. The Spurs won that series in seven games and went on to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Knicks.
Oklahoma City brings back Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the two-time reigning MVP. San Antonio has Victor Wembanyama, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. The best scorer in the West against the best defender in the league is the matchup the late window was built for.
The Thunder have reason to circle this one. They were the No. 1 seed in the West last season and still lost to San Antonio when it mattered. Opening in San Antonio, on national television, is the fastest way to start answering for that.
The Rest of Opening Week
The national schedule does not slow down after Tuesday.
Wednesday, Oct. 21, is an ESPN doubleheader. Giannis Antetokounmpo makes his Miami Heat debut at home against Minnesota at 7:30 p.m. ET, and it is also LaMelo Ball's first game with the Timberwolves. At 10 p.m. ET, Stephen Curry and Golden State visit Luka Doncic and the Lakers. Doncic led the league in scoring in 2025-26.
Thursday, Oct. 22, is another ESPN doubleheader. James makes his Philadelphia home debut against Donovan Mitchell and Cleveland at 7 p.m. ET. Then Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder host Nikola Jokic and Denver at 9:30 p.m. ET at Paycom Center.
Friday, Oct. 23, is the first NBA game night on Prime Video. The Knicks visit Boston at 7 p.m. ET. San Antonio then hosts Houston at 9:30 p.m. ET at Moody Center in Austin, on the Texas campus where Kevin Durant played his college season.
That is a lot of player movement for one week. Antetokounmpo in Miami. Ball in Minnesota. James and Brown in Philadelphia. Durant in Houston. By the end of the first Friday, most of the league's biggest offseason moves will have played at least once on national television.
The way 2025-26 ended explains a lot of this schedule.
New York won the title. On the way, the Knicks beat Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Finals, a series the league will replay on Peacock on Dec. 21 in Cleveland. They then beat San Antonio in the Finals, which is why the Knicks and Spurs get the Christmas noon window and a March 7 Sunday night meeting in San Antonio.
Detroit's season ended in the East semifinals against Cleveland. That is the matchup NBC picked for its Martin Luther King Jr. Day opener on Jan. 18. The Pistons were the top seed in the East and did not get out of the second round, which is why Tuesday's game against Boston means more than a typical opener for them.
Oklahoma City was the top seed in the West and lost the conference finals in seven games to San Antonio. The Thunder visit the Pistons on Feb. 27 in a meeting of last season's two No. 1 seeds.
The draft class gets its own showcase too. No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa and the Wizards visit No. 2 pick Darryn Peterson and the Jazz on Feb. 27 at Delta Center at 3 p.m. ET.
A few more dates from the league's schedule release are worth saving.
Peacock NBA Monday starts Oct. 26 with Golden State at Denver at 10 p.m. ET. NBC's Coast 2 Coast Tuesday returns Oct. 27 with Detroit at New York at 8 p.m. ET and Portland at the Lakers at 8 p.m. PT.
Emirates NBA Cup Group Play begins Friday, Oct. 30. The Cup knockout rounds run Dec. 4 through Dec. 11, with the championship at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
There are no games on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3. All 30 teams play the night before.
Christmas Day has five games on ABC and ESPN, opening with a Finals rematch between the Spurs and Knicks at Madison Square Garden at noon ET. James returns to Los Angeles with the 76ers that afternoon at 5 p.m. ET.
The rest of Christmas is Heat at Celtics at 2:30 p.m. ET, Thunder at Timberwolves at 8 p.m. ET in Minnesota's first Christmas home game, and Nuggets at Warriors at 10:30 p.m. ET.
On Feb. 3, Detroit hosts New York in the second NBA Pioneers Classic, honoring the league's first Black players. It is one of the better midseason dates on the ESPN schedule and a rematch of two of the East's best teams.
The regular season ends Sunday, April 11, 2027, with all 30 teams in action.
How to Watch This Season
The national package is split three ways again. NBC and Peacock have Tuesday nights, Sunday nights from late January, and the big holiday windows like Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents' Day. Peacock streams its Monday night games nationwide, and those exclusives also air on NBCSN. ESPN and ABC have Wednesday doubleheaders, select Fridays from January, Saturday prime time on ABC, three Sunday afternoon doubleheaders in February and March, and Christmas Day. Prime Video has most Friday nights, the Cup knockout rounds, Thursday doubleheaders starting in January and the full Play-In Tournament.
NBC also has All-Star weekend, Feb. 19 to 21 in Phoenix.
The league goes abroad twice in January. San Antonio and New Orleans play in Paris on Jan. 14 and in Manchester, England, on Jan. 17. The Manchester game is the first NBA regular-season game ever played in that city. AWS NBA Rivals Week runs Jan. 26 to 30 with 12 national games across every partner.
For opening night, the simple version is this: NBC on cable or antenna, Peacock if you stream, from 3 p.m. ET to the end of the late game in San Antonio.
The question we care most about on opening night is Philadelphia. James and Brown are two players who have spent years as the top option on their teams, and the 76ers will need them to share the ball from the first night. Boston's first game without Brown is a close second. The Celtics have built their identity on two-way wings for a decade, and Tuesday is the first real look at what replaces that.
Opening night does not decide much in an 82-game season, and every team has 80 of its 82 games set already, with the other two tied to Cup results in December. It does tell you which teams arrived ready. NBC and Peacock have all three games, so you can watch the full night from the 3 p.m. ET tip to the last possession in San Antonio.
Gameday Signal will be back with the numbers after the first week. The Signal, Not The Noise.
